As any significant honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
