The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
